Total Theatre is a national development agency for contemporary theatre based in the UK.

Total Theatre demands that theatre is more: more than a building; more than a style; more than a museum piece. It suggests a complete and compelling live experience.

Total Theatre currently produces the Total Theatre Awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and are strongly associated with the quarterly publication, Total Theatre Magazine, produced by the University of Winchester .

We resist too narrow a definition of the term ‘total theatre' but imagine artists and companies leading innovative work within devised theatre, live art, visual performance, mime, experimental theatre, clown, circus, street arts, mask, cabaret and new variety, site specific, dance-theatre, puppet-theatre… and more.

We are interested in new developments in theatre-making in the following ways:

•  finding ways of making connections between different forms of   theatre practice

•  exploring excellence

•  developing ways in which theatre is marketed and critiqued

•  championing the unique skills practiced by theatre-makers to other sectors

In 2007 Total Theatre embarked on a two-year process of revision and change.

Expect to see new projects, connections and ideas emerging as you revisit our site.
