TOTAL
THEATRE AWARDS 2011 The awardees of the 2011 Total Theatre Awards have been announced following lengthy debate. Awards are given across three categories: Work by Emerging Artists/Company; Physical/Visual and Devised Performance and Innovation and Experimentation Since 1987 the Total Theatre Awards have honoured the most innovative theatre makers performing at the Fringe. The chosen acts will be awarded at a ceremony at Fringe Central on Thursday 25 August at 6pm. Pippa Bailey, Director of Total Theatre Awards said “ This year we have
been delighted by the diverse range of work, and have been intrigued by
emerging themes such as alcohol which was torched on in several productions,
and gender, which is always a fascinating subject - its influence can
be seen across a range of high quality productions including one of the
winners of our award for innovation, “Maybe if you choreograph me, you
will feel better” a relational piece that happens between one female performer
and one male audience member and addresses gender and intercultural politics. “We have also been delighted by the international elements of the pieces chosen for award including Poland’s Turandot and Tania el Khoury from Lebanon.” A special note also goes to Significant Contribution to the field of Total Theatre winner Judith Knight who alongside Seonaid Stewart, founded the formidable Arts Admin in 1980 and who over the last 31 years has worked to support, manage, produce and financially subsidize some of the most noteworthy artists and projects of the past three decades. A huge number of artists and companies can attribute their initial or long-term success to Arts Admin, and at its helm, Judith has provided the support that has allowed artists to create work. Who is behind the Total Theatre Awards? The Total Theatre Awards is a project of Total Theatre, a small agency producing projects to support theatre makers and develop their audiences. Total Theatre is affiliated with Total Theatre Magazine, although the awards are independent of the publication. How does the process work? Companies performing at this year’s Fringe could apply to be considered for the awards by submitting an application form before 29th July 2011. All shows that applied have been visited by at least one peer assessor who decides if a show meets the criteria. If successful, the show is attended by another assessor who can then put it forward for the long list, which is then reduced to a shortlist. A panel of approximately twelve judges that includes directors, producers, academics and journalists judge the shortlisted shows. Judges must see all shows in a category to be able to judge it, and must not have any association with work they are judging. Total Theatre Award Judges 2011 |
